7 Unsettling Books to Ease into Autumn and Fall
I don't know about you, but I am well and truly ready for autumn. So, what better way than a few unsettling stories to ease your way into Fall and Autumn?
These aren't your classic Halloween or autumn recommendations, those will be coming in the next couple of months, but I've looked for books that are good at bridging the gap between summer and autumn, some are more in the sunshine territory, but they are all slightly off, and should keep you on the edge of your seat!
(all links are affiliate links - it doesn’t cost you any extra, but it helps me keep my social media and YouTube going!)
Starting up, I have 5 books I've read and highly recommended, and later I've got 2 books I'm dying to read… and maybe this is the sign I need to dig in!
A Bone In His Teeth - Kellan Graves.
This was the inspiration behind this whole list. I need you to understand how much I love Kellan Graves’ writing, and how much I think you need to read it. Trans and disability rep, sirens, murder and mystery, what more could you want? This is an atmospheric read that has freaked me out every single time I've read it, even though I now know the ending.
Glass Houses | Rachel Caine
The first book in the Morganville Vampire's series, while I could probably be recommending Twilight since we are beginning the season. I find these spookier, and more unsettling. While it has your usual teenage angst you want from a YA series, it has characters who don't feel right and you should definitely not trust, however much they say you can.
A Marvellous Light | Freya Marske
Did you think I would miss recommending this here? I love the mystery elements of this book, and it has a magic maze!?! It's been a couple of years since I last read this (which is entirely too long) so we are going through my slightly rose tinted spectacles, but I remember the book feeling magical and atmospheric, with a curse ticking down the clock hanging over them like a sword.
Wolf by Wolf | Ryan Graudin
This is not a book I see recommend very often, I think there is only one person on Bookstagram I've actually seen who's recommending this book, even though it was a Radio 2 Book Club choice when it first came out (recently Bury Our Bones by V.E. Schwab has been a Radio 2 Book Club book). Wolf by Wolf is an alternative reality, set just after the Germans win WWII, with a girl who is determined to kill Hitler, her challenge to win an almost impossible motorcycle race, while pretending to be last year's winner.
The Kingdoms | Natasha Pulley
Atmospheric and eerie. Much like Wolf by Wolf this is another alternative history, set in a world where the French won the battle of Trafalgar, and England is a french colony. A mysterious postcard breaks the world and everything you think you know.
Now, onto the two books on my TBR…
Our Crooked Hearts | Melissa Albert
Now, I will be completely honest, the only reason I have this book was it was part of the ticket price for Waterstones’ online book release event where Melissa Albert was in conversation with V.E. Schwab and I just couldn't not. That being said, while I have never watched or read Practical Magic, this book gives me the same vibes, set in summer, the book is about witchcraft and generational trauma.
Welcome to Nightvale | Joseph Fink & Jeffrey Cranor
If you've ever listened to the podcast I feel like you know why I've included it on this list, but if you haven't. Welcome to Nightvale where every conspiracy theory exists, you cannot take dogs into the dog park, beware the glowing cloud, and there's a faceless man in a tan jacket. This has been on my shelf for years and I really need to read it, ironically I really want to read it, but I just haven't been able to pick it up yet, mood readers it's just not fair!
